Innovative: Alexa in retirement and nursing homes for more self-determination

Turning on the lights, calling relatives, contacting caregivers – these are just three of the many possibilities that using Alexa in retirement and nursing homes offers. DRK-Service GmbH has recognized this potential and, together with DiscVision Solutions GmbH, has launched a nationwide initiative to introduce the technology in its facilities. The goal is to improve the quality of life for seniors and people with disabilities while easing the workload of caregivers.

Technology for More Independence and Social Participation

Alexa Smart Properties for Senior Living offers a voice-controlled solution specifically tailored to the needs of seniors. By using Alexa-enabled devices like the Echo Show, residents can access facility information, enjoy entertainment options, set appointment reminders, and communicate with family members via voice or video calls—all through intuitive voice commands or touch.

For example, a resident in a DRK nursing home in Berlin uses Alexa to talk to her daughter in another city every day, giving her a sense of connection and reducing loneliness. Additionally, the technology enables control of the living environment, such as lighting and room temperature, promoting the independence of seniors. People with limited mobility can turn the lights on and off via voice control without relying on assistance.

Relieving Care Staff Through Connected Communication

For caregivers, the integration of Alexa enables more efficient communication within the facility. Through Alexa’s communication function, important information can be exchanged quickly and easily. In a DRK nursing home in Bavaria, caregivers use this feature to remind residents to take their medication or to announce group activities without having to enter each room individually. This saves valuable time that can instead be dedicated to personalized care for residents.

Additionally, residents can call for assistance from caregivers simply using voice commands whenever they need help.

Pilot Project “LeNa” as a Pioneer

A successful example of this technology in action is the “LeNa” project by the DRK district association Müllheim. This initiative primarily supports elderly individuals living alone who require care and assistance at home. One participant, who rarely receives visitors, uses Alexa to join virtual reading circles and connect with others. This not only reduces her social isolation but also helps keep her mentally active. Additionally, some users benefit from shared “goodnight rituals” with a familiar voice via Alexa, making them feel safer and more at ease.

The intuitive voice technology of Alexa can assist in caring for the elderly and promote a more self-determined and inclusive life. Our customers tell us that Alexa helps them feel less lonely and makes everyday life easier.

Future Prospects

DRK-Service GmbH plans to expand the introduction of Alexa Smart Properties for Senior Living to more DRK facilities and care services across Germany in the coming years. This initiative demonstrates how modern technology can enrich the daily lives of seniors while also improving working conditions for caregivers. By integrating Alexa into everyday care, not only is residents’ autonomy strengthened, but an important step toward digitalization and innovation in the care sector is also taken.
